Responding to Alerts via Email with MOM 2005
Some people return the kindnesses of the support community with little gestures…answering a few questions here and there, displays of gratitude. And some guys return the favor all at once….with interest. That would be David Wallis of the UK. A little background…I received a correspondence right before the holiday from David. He said he'd been developing a .NET application that would allow a MOM administrator to respond to MOM alert notifications and actually acknowledge or resolve the alert by simply forwarding the email, with no need to touch the Operator Console. And would I be interested in testing, documentation and offering some feedback? Well, after 2 weeks of testing, updates and some work to document the changes to Notification Workflow to allow it work with David's application as well, the first version of the MOM Email Service is available. I think you'll agree David's first contribution is pretty significant.
How It Works
The MOM Email Service is a .NET application that reads MOM alert emails forwarded to a designated Exchange mailbox. The service checks email messages in the designated box for the string ' resolved' or 'acknowledged ' in the message body. The service extracts the Alert GUID from the email body and then resolves or acknowledges the alert based on the string match, allowing MOM administrators to respond to alerts from anywhere one has email access. The application must be installed on your MOM 2005 managment server.
Where to get it Download version 1.0 of the MOM Email Service with detailed Installation Guide at the URL below: http://www.momresources.org/tools/MOM_Email_Service.zip
Feedback
Although we have been using this application in a production environment for about 10 days, David has kindly been producing new versions very quickly, and I just finished the documentation just today. So please report installation issues, bugs, documentation omissions and other errata to administrator@momresources.org

post a comment links to this postGreat that someone offers this to whole MOM community! I wish I was a programmer (and could do more than creating Windows Sidebar Gadgets) ;-)
I've have read the documentation and not tested it yet but it seems like a great application for MOM. You need Word 2007 for opening the docx documentation. Maybe change this to pdf?

The only programming I did was ages ago. I 'programmed' a Win32 tray-icon program that monitors a predefined Big Sister (monitoring tool) page and alerts when the status of that page changes, using a popup window and sound alarms.

Will this work with OpsManager 2007?
Sorry, MOM 2005 only.
Once I get time to install 2007 at home I'll write a version that works!
Great App, however it doesn't work me.
Perhaps because of french Mailboxes
Tried "Boite de récéption" in the URL.
Svc try to process mails as seen in the event log "Processing Email..." but nothing else and no change to alerts :-(
Tried also to give MOM rights to the account...without success
If you want to drop me a mail at david@wallis2000.co.uk, I'll see if I can help you out and modify it so that it does work.
This sounds like a great idea, has there been any movement with system center ?
