Ops Mgr 2007 Gateway Server and PKI Scenarios Document

The doc we posted during the Ops Mgr 2007 RC2 timeframe has been updated for RTM.

It provides guidance what are common areas of confusion, including functions of the Gateway Server role in Ops Mgr, as well as mutual authentication for untrusted / isolated environments. To that end, we've illustrated some common certificate-based authentication scenarios to facilitate greater understanding of how to effectively deploy these features, and provided step-by-step guidance along the way.

Recent MOM 2005 KBs and Comments

926681 The last sampled value is displayed in some alerts in the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Operator console

I'd seen this one a million times and wondered why the last sample always matched the average. This patch is worth applying

928644 Various error messages occur that reference "SELECT permission denied" when you run certain Summary Reporting Pack reports in Microsoft Operations Manager 2005

I think most people use the DTS account for the SRS account used to read data for reports, so I don't expect this is very common.

929797 Error message in the .NET Framework when you click a button in a MOM 2005 console: "Out of memory"

This one comes up only with some interference from 3rd party applications, so not a concern if you've got a dedicated MOM Reporting Server.

Recent MOM KBs

There have been a large number of KBs in recent days it seems, just wanted to quickly round them up in one spot for anyone who keeps up with them. We're also starting to see some KBs that are really more "how-to" type articles for common configuration questions.

922331 ... How to resolve a "There are <n> more managed computers in this management group than the number of specified MOM management licenses" error in Microsoft Operations Manager 2005

Several New MOM KB Articles This Week

It's been a busy week for MOM KB's and hotfixes. The following were recently published.

913366   The Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) agent does not back up event logs if the Action account is configured to run as the local system account

906858   The MOM agent may generate event ID 25257 in MOM 2005

913278     Error message in the MOM 2005 Web console: "Value was either too large or too small for an Int32"

HOTFIX:   Deadlocks may occur with MOM 2005 SP1 on SQL 2005.

There is also another KB article in the works regarding an official statement of support (or lack thereof) for SQL Notification Services on an MSCS Cluster, based on a case we had open with PSS. I know it was rumored not to work, but we actually ran it through the paces to a conclusion anyway.

New MOM 2005-related KB Articles

There are a couple of fresh KB articles regarding problems reported to PSS:

This one resolves an error related to Web Sites & Services Reports, but requires you edit the SQL query in the report itself.

912999   Error message that you receive when you try to use MOM 2005 Reporting to run any one of the reports that are included with the Microsoft Web Sites and Services Management Pack: "Reporting Services Error"

The 2nd should only affect folks without the latest version of the IIS Mgmt Pack, released last August. The old version contained a rule that automatically added IP addresses to the site restrictions when they appeared in a HTTP 401 or 402 error in the IIS logs.

912156   IIS 5.0 or IIS 6.0-based Web servers that have Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 and the IIS Management Pack installed may randomly add IP address and domain name restrictions to all Web sites on the local computer
